If you are developing your own pattern, test the strap length on a sample first. The right length depends on cup placement, back height, elastic recovery, and the intended adjustment range.
Position one end of the strap elastic at the upper back edge of the bra, with the plush side facing the body side of the garment. Fold the raw end under if your construction method requires it, then stitch it securely using a narrow zigzag, three-step zigzag, or the stitch specified by the pattern. Avoid a straight stitch on stretch elastic unless the area will not need to stretch.
2. Thread the elastic through the slider
Hold the slider so its center bar is horizontal. Bring the free end of the strap through one outer opening from the underside to the top side. Carry the elastic over the center bar, then feed it down through the second opening. At this stage, the slider should be on the strap, with the free elastic end extending toward the shoulder and front of the garment.
There is no universal visual rule for which face of every slider should point outward because slider designs vary. Instead, check that both straps use the same orientation and that the visible face suits the garment design. If the slider has a raised, textured, or decorative surface, that is usually the side intended to remain visible.
3. Pass the free end through the ring
Slide the ring onto the free end of the strap. The ring will later connect to the front strap extension or directly to the bra cup, depending on the pattern. Bring the elastic through the ring and fold it back toward the slider.
At this point, lay the strap flat on the work surface. The plush side should still be facing the same direction along the entire strap. If the elastic has twisted between the slider and ring, correct it now. Once the end is secured, a twist is much more difficult to fix cleanly.
4. Return the elastic through the slider to lock it
Bring the free end back to the slider. Feed it through the opening nearest the returning elastic, pass it over the center bar, and bring it through the remaining opening. The elastic should now wrap around the center bar twice, with the returning tail lying against the original strap layer.
Pull the strap gently to remove excess slack, but do not pull it so tight that the slider sits directly against the ring. Leave enough adjustable length between the hardware pieces for the wearer to shorten or lengthen the strap. A useful check is to move the slider by hand: it should travel with firm resistance rather than sliding freely.
5. Secure the strap tail
Fold the raw end of the returning strap under by approximately 1/4 inch, then stitch the tail to the strap section beneath it. Keep this stitch line below the slider so it does not interfere with adjustment. A short, dense zigzag or bartack-style stitch is appropriate for most strap elastics.
Do not stitch through the slider itself or sew so close to the center bar that the hardware cannot move. The tail needs to be secure, while the main strap must remain free to travel through the slider.
6. Attach the ring to the front strap section
The ring is usually secured to a short strap extension at the top of the bra cup. Thread the front strap section through the ring, fold the end back, and stitch it in place. Keep the plush side facing the body and use the same stitch method as the back attachment.
If your pattern uses a different configuration, such as a front-adjusting strap or a ring-and-slider placement at the back neckline, the routing may be reversed. The underlying principle remains the same: the slider must hold two passes of elastic around its center bar, and the ring must connect the two strap sections without twisting.
