How to Sew Swimwear Lining Elastic in Two Passes
The two-pass application method creates a durable, enclosed edge suitable for most lined swimsuits. Use polyester thread, which tolerates moisture better than cotton thread, and fit your machine with a stretch, ballpoint, or microtex needle appropriate for the fabric. A dull or incorrect needle can cause skipped stitches and tiny holes in swim knit.
First pass: attach the elastic
Place the elastic against the wrong side of the lining at the raw edge. If the shell and lining are already basted together, the elastic sits against the lining side of that combined edge. Align the elastic edge with the fabric edge and stitch using a narrow zigzag, three-step zigzag, or an appropriate stretch stitch.
Stretch the elastic between the marked points, but do not stretch the fabric itself. The fabric should feed flat while the elastic is extended only enough to meet the next mark. Pulling both layers creates ripples that remain after the edge is turned. Keep the stitch close to the inner edge of the elastic so the outer edge will be enclosed in the final turn.
At the end, overlap the elastic ends by about 1/2 inch and secure them with several zigzag stitches. Avoid a bulky knot or a hard, stacked seam allowance. That small overlap should sit in a low-visibility area when possible, such as the side seam or crotch intersection, according to the pattern layout.
Second pass: turn and finish
Turn the elastic and seam allowance to the inside so the fabric wraps around the elastic. The shell should form the clean exterior edge, with the lining lying smooth inside the garment. Finger-press as you turn. Do not use a hot iron directly on swimwear elastic or synthetic knit unless the fabric supplier confirms it is safe.
Topstitch the turned edge with a zigzag, three-step zigzag, or coverstitch. The stitch must stretch with the garment, so a straight stitch is rarely appropriate. Sew close to the inner folded edge of the elastic. Apply only enough tension to keep the edge smooth. If you stretch aggressively during this pass, the opening can become too tight even when the first pass was correct.
A coverstitch gives a familiar ready-to-wear appearance, but it is not automatically the best choice for every project. It requires careful setup and can be harder to unpick on delicate swim knit. A well-balanced zigzag is professional, flexible, and practical for small-batch production.
Control Tension at Curves and Stress Points
A clean elastic edge should lie flat when relaxed and return to shape after stretching. If it flares, the elastic is too long or was not stretched enough during application. If the fabric puckers, the elastic may be too short, the fabric may have been stretched with it, or the stitch length may be too tight.
Leg openings deserve special attention. Many bodies need greater recovery through the back leg curve to prevent the suit from riding up or sagging, but excessive tension can create visible indentation and discomfort. Apply tension gradually, not in abrupt sections. The quarter marks help, but additional marks around the deepest curve often produce a more even result.
At the neckline, use restraint. A neckline that is pulled tight can curl outward or flatten the intended shape. For V-necks, scoop necks, and sharply angled design lines, baste the lining to the shell and test the turned edge before committing to the final topstitch. Sometimes a small adjustment to elastic length is all that separates a gaping neckline from a stable one.
Troubleshoot Before You Finish Every Edge
Check each completed opening before moving on. Stretch it gently, release it, and inspect both sides. The exterior should be smooth, the lining should not roll past the seam, and the stitch should not pop when extended.
If the edge is wavy, remove the second pass first and reassess the elastic tension. If the elastic is visible from the right side, the first stitching line may be too far from the elastic edge or the turn may be inconsistent. If the lining pulls below the shell at the edge, trim the lining seam allowance carefully only if the pattern allows it, then re-turn and stitch.
For production work, record the elastic width, cut length, stitch type, needle, and machine settings that worked on your sample. Swimwear materials vary enough that repeatable notes are valuable.
