A swimsuit neckline that looks clean on the table can become a constant adjustment problem once it meets water, sunscreen, and movement. When you use silicone elastic tape at the right edge, it adds controlled grip against the skin without changing the garment’s outward appearance. That makes it especially useful for strapless styles, off-the-shoulder necklines, bandeau tops, and swimwear openings that need to stay positioned through wear.
Silicone elastic is a technical component, not a universal substitute for every elastic in a garment. Its effectiveness depends on placement, width, stretch, fabric recovery, and sewing method. Used with intention, it can improve the performance of a finished piece while preserving a soft, professional edge.
What Silicone Elastic Tape Does
Silicone elastic tape is a narrow elastic tape with one or more silicone-coated lines on one side. The silicone creates gentle friction against the body, helping an edge resist slipping or rolling. The elastic itself supplies recovery, while the silicone provides the staying power that standard elastic alone cannot always deliver.
It is most often used inside the garment, with the silicone facing the skin. In swimwear, it is commonly installed along the upper edge of bandeau tops, one-piece suit necklines, or leg openings where a design needs additional security. In lingerie, it can support strapless bras, longline bra edges, and specialty styles with a low or wide neckline.
The goal is not to pull the garment tightly against the body. Excess tension can create pressure marks, distortion, or an edge that curls outward. A well-selected silicone elastic helps the garment remain in place while allowing normal movement and comfortable breathing.
Where to Use Silicone Elastic Tape

Choosing the Right Width and Construction

Narrow silicone elastic can provide discreet support along a lightweight edge, while wider tape distributes grip over a larger area and is often better for strapless swimwear and fuller-bust designs. Wider is not automatically better. A tape that is too wide for the seam allowance can create bulk, show through fine fabric, or make a curved edge difficult to sew smoothly.
Match the elastic to the garment’s use. Swimwear requires materials that tolerate chlorinated water, saltwater, perspiration, sunscreen, and repeated laundering. Lingerie may prioritize a finer hand and a less visible finish. For garments worn close to sensitive skin, sourcing matters as much as construction. Look for components with clear material information and quality documentation, particularly when producing goods for customers rather than personal use.
Also inspect the silicone layout. Some tapes have a single silicone line, while others have multiple lines for greater grip. A single line may be enough for a lightly supported neckline. Multiple silicone lines can be useful where a garment has more pull, but they may feel firmer against the body. Test the tape against the intended lining and fabric before committing it to production.
How to Use Silicone Elastic Tape Without Distorting the Edge
Start by identifying which direction the elastic is intended to face. The silicone side should generally face the body. Mark the garment’s center front, center back, and key quarter points, then mark the elastic to match. This prevents the elastic from being stretched unevenly during application.
The amount of elastic reduction depends on the pattern, fabric, and location. A stable neckline may need only slight reduction, while a strapless edge often needs more. There is no single percentage that works for every style. Test a sample first, particularly if the design uses compression fabric, a highly elastic lining, or a neckline with sharp curves.
Sew the tape to the wrong side of the garment with the silicone facing inward. A narrow zigzag, three-step zigzag, or other stretch-compatible stitch is generally appropriate. Avoid a straight stitch because it can break when the edge stretches. Keep the tape flat and avoid stitching directly through the silicone line when possible, since repeated needle perforations can weaken its grip and create an uneven finish.
After the first pass, trim the seam allowance only if your construction method requires it, then turn the elastic to the inside and secure the finished edge with a second stretch stitch. For swimwear, this is often done with a zigzag, coverstitch, or other finish that maintains elasticity. The right method depends on the machine setup and whether the elastic is enclosed, turned, or applied as a visible internal finish.
Work slowly around curves. Silicone tape has more resistance than ordinary elastic, so it can be tempting to pull it aggressively. Instead, guide the fabric and elastic together between the marked points. If the edge ripples after sewing, the elastic may have been stretched too much, the fabric may have been fed unevenly, or the stitch settings may be too tight.
Sample Before Production
A small sewn sample can prevent expensive problems in a finished run. Use the actual shell fabric, lining, thread, and stitch settings intended for production. Stretch the sample repeatedly, wet it, allow it to dry, and check whether the silicone remains secure and whether the edge recovers smoothly.
For swimwear, test the sample after exposure to water and after contact with a small amount of sunscreen or body lotion. These conditions can change how a garment feels against the body and how effectively an edge stays in place. For customer-facing products, also assess whether the silicone feels comfortable over a reasonable wear period. High grip is not useful if the finished edge feels overly restrictive.
This step is particularly valuable when grading a pattern across sizes. A reduction that performs well in a small sample size may be uncomfortable in a larger size, or insufficient in a fuller-bust style. Silicone elastic should be part of the fit specification, not an afterthought added at the sewing stage.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
The most frequent issue is treating silicone elastic like ordinary swim elastic. It needs more deliberate placement and more careful tension control. Applying it with heavy stretch may seem like the safest choice, but it can cause a neckline to dig in, flip, or create visible drag lines across the garment.
Another mistake is using silicone tape to solve a pattern or support problem. If a strapless top slides because the band is too loose, the cups are under-supported, or the lining lacks stability, grip tape alone will not provide a reliable fix. Review the entire construction system: band tension, power net, closures, lining, cup support, and elastic distribution all affect performance.
Finally, avoid selecting trim solely by appearance. For intimate apparel and swimwear, the materials sit against the skin and must tolerate repeated use. Professional-grade components with transparent safety and manufacturing standards help protect both the wearer’s comfort and the consistency of your finished product.
A silicone edge should feel like quiet insurance: present when the wearer moves, swims, or reaches, but never the feature they notice. When the tape, pattern, and fabric work together, the garment stays where it was designed to stay.
